Information on Modesty

According to St. John Eudes (The Wondrous Childhood of the Most Holy Mother of God, Pg. 168 & 173), “These are they whom St. Jerome styles ‘Amazons of the devil’ who arm themselves from head to foot to make war upon chastity, by their artifices of hair dressing, uncovered shoulders and arms, and other such vanities, killing the princess of heaven in the souls of others as well as in their own…Others protest that they wish to do nothing to displease God, but, at the same time, they do not care to displease the world; else why is it that they dress after a worldly fashion…take so great care of their appearance and make parade of immodesty of attire even when presenting themselves at the Holy table?...How vain and cursed are these fashions of the world…[in the revelations of Saint Bridget of Sweden] one day God gave the Saint to behold the tribunal of God, accused herself of her crimes, and among them, not only of having followed the manners and customs of worldly vanity, but even of having invented certain new ones. ‘unhappy that I am’ she cried, ‘to have clothed myself from head to foot with vanity and pride. For I have followed all the vain fashions of the world and have even shown the way to new vanities and habits of pride’ and in chapter 57, book 8 of the St. Bridget’s revelations Our Lady speaking to St Bridget on the same subject, declared to her that one of the principal reasons why God then chastised the kingdom of Sweden was the vanity and pride and various worldly fashions which the people persisted in following…St. Charles Borromeo forbade the confessors in his diocese to grant absolution to those women and girls who refused to dress themselves becomingly and modestly...”
